I've been having trouble with my websites and blog over at blog.stedawa.com hosted by lypha.com. Hackers have broken in, removed assorted files here and there, and added their own fake bank look-alike files here and there. Not just amateurish, ha-ha-I-got-in files, but professionally coded, exact imitations of files that would be on a corporation's (in this case, bank's) website.
They've broken in 6 times in the last 2 months, but more accurately, 4 times in the last 10 days. Now, the main question is, Why pick on me?
Heck, they should read my other bloggit about the Insituto Quimbaya. I side with outsiders; I sympathize with those ostracized; I moor with the poor. No guff! I like Colombia! I like Colombian coffee. I like the color green, as in emeralds, which Colombia has in abundance.
Why my little non-profit, as yet inconsequential websites? Ever since I've had my Gmail broken into before, I've made strangely formulated passwords Yes, that's right! The hackintruder got into my email account. That was a shocker! I had thought Google servers would be invincible [almost impossible to defeat].
But this time, these hack attacks are running me ragged [making me tired]. The cleanup takes 8 - 10 hours to do.
This means that, using my folders and web space as a base, they can look exactly like an official business, such as a bank (in my case, a bank in Colombia).
This image file was in one of their directories they created in my web storage space. Exact duplicate of the original.
They send out what looks like official company email and ask people to sign in to their accounts and update information. Unsuspecting customers do that, but will later find that the phishers have transferred large sums of money out of their account. Yes, this type of cyber-crime is called phishing.
Being a bit of a sleuth, I opened some of their .php files and took a quick glance. Lo and behold, a hacker website jumps out at me. milw0rm. I look it up a Wikipedia. Yeppers, they are into hacking and dismantling websites connected with atomic power and research, but now (perhaps) they are into a more profitable form of cyber crime, one that puts more than pizza on the programmers' table.
I also found PNTpsy and (in the tol.php file) hacker-newbie.org which is based in Indonesia. Colombia, Indonesia, UK -- these thugs are a global network.
I've decided to try to design a new blog and website at a different host. This website is hosted at snackwebsites.com. I signed up for about $4/month, and they provide some templates and some nifty widgets that I might want to include. Unlike with my previous blog, I don't need to use an FTP program to upload my pics.
What you see here is the result of a few days' work.
So far, so good. I am hoping that my files for this site are in deeper directories than the files for blog.stedawa.com at lypha. Thus, they would be more difficult to break into. I've just learned that snackwebsites keeps its (my) files on the amazon cloud. No wonder it's fast. Way to go, snack crew!
The other plus factor is that snackwebsites can scale down for viewing on tablets or smartphones. I don't have a smartphone at present (klunker luddite mentality), but I viewed my site using an Opera Mini simulator. It looks good.
