Van Cliburn, a lanky Texan, won the Tchaikovsky International Competition in Moscow in its inaugural year 1958 with his stunning rendition of Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto #1.
He passed on at his home in Fort Worth on Wednesday at the age of 78.
At about age 15, I discovered classical music, and this piano concerto by Van Cliburn won me over.
